The school grounds contain an acre of walled garden in which a wide variety of fruit and vegetables are grown. It is possible for boys with strong horticultural interests to have individual plots in the walled garden for which they are solely responsible.
Department facilities include a substantial heated greenhouse which contains a mist propagator, a new poly-tunnel as well as cold frames, a large potting shed and numerous flowerbeds, shrubs and trees around the grounds. The gardens provide a wide range of commercial vegetables and decorative plant specimens which are for sale, used on the premises and general study. Pupils are taught the safe use and maintenance of a wide variety of machinery such as lawn mowers, rotorvators and strimmers.
As on the farm, boys are involved in routine garden duties after school, while senior boys hold posts of responsibility for various areas such as the greenhouses and boys' plots. |
